12th Cold Front of the Season

Severe weather struck Honduras last night. High winds of 70km per hour caused damage to trees and electrical lines, affecting at least 80 families.

The Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO) said this is the 12th cold front of the season, and with it came strong winds, cool temperatures, and forceful rains.

The National Energy Company (ENEE), hopes to restore the service to the hospital Mario Catarino Rivas and the Independent National University of Honduras in the Sula Valley by 4:00 p.m. today. Many other schools were forced to suspend classes due to the energy outages. Two electrical posts in the free zone of Puerto Cortes succumbed to strong winds, leaving communities such as Choloma, and Santa Cruz of Yojoa without electricity.

The extreme weather also paralyzed the yacht transportation between La Ceiba and Roatan. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), the cold front will bring rains between 60 and 80 millimeters, with amounts of 150 millimeters in the departments of Cortes, Atlantida, Colon, the Bay Islands and Gracias a Dios in the North, and 30 to 50 millimeters north of Yoro and Olancho.
