Melon Controversy Continues

March 27th, 2008 · No Comments

The Honduran government says it has sent three top ministers to Washington to lobby against a U.S. decision to block its melon exports in the wake of a salmonella outbreak.

Honduran President Manuel Zelaya says the ministers of agriculture, trade and health will meet with U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials to tell them about the quality of melons his nation produces.

The officials traveled to Washington on Wednesday.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked grocers to remove from their shelves melons shipped by a Honduran company after a salmonella outbreak sickened 50 people. Honduran officials say there is no proof the fruit was first infected in the Central American country.
