Honduras’ Oldest Market Burns

Colon Market, one of the oldest markets in Tegucigalpa, was engulfed in flames today. 18 trucks and 250 firefighters were sent to the market to fight the fire according to firefighter spokesman, Oscar Triminio.

The fire broke out at 5:30 a.m. in the center of the market. The roof and some classrooms from Hibueras education center were damaged.
The police and soldiers arrived quickly to avoid pilfering in stores and nearby shops.

“We are going to ask aid from the national government and congress, because this is not about political issues, but to help those who lost everything,” Tegucigalpa Mayor, Ricardo Alvarez said.

According to firefighters, it was one of the most intensive fires in the last 10 years in the country.

Causes of the fire are still unknown.

“In response to their inquiries, our stance is that in consideration of the welfare and benefit of the Honduran people, we will continue our existing humanitarian aid and cooperation projects there.”
