Green Alert Issued by COPECO

November 28th, 2009 · No Comments

The Honduran Permanent Contingency Committee (Copeco) issued a green alert Friday after constant rains caused flooding in the north and in the Caribbean area of Honduras.

Copeco said the measure will be in effect for three days in the departments of Atlantida, Colon, the Bay Islands, Cortes, and in the north of Yoro as well as La Ceiba, one of the most affected areas.

According to Copeco, there will be moderate to strong rains reaching 90mm to 120mm in these regions, and the minimum temperatures will fall to 12 Celsius degrees in the west of the country, 15 degrees in the center and 17 degrees in the east.

Meanwhile, waves in the Caribbean Sea are expected to reach 1.5to 2.0 meters.

The heavy rains in the past few days have caused flooding in 14 neighborhoods of La Ceiba, making 26 people homeless and forcing them to seek public shelters, Copeco said.

Although meteorologists have forecast no rains for Sunday, the day of Honduras’ presidential elections, Copeco still recommended that people be on the alert for possible heavy rains and take precautionary measures against the overflowing of rivers and gorges.
