Lula May Support Honduras Returning to OAS

February 20th, 2010 · No Comments

The Brazilian government considers it would be “significant” for Honduras to return to the Organization of American States (OAS), and would welcome concrete measures towards reconciliation, said the Brazilian presidential spokesman, Marcelo Baumbach.

“President (Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva) does not want to endure a situation of a breakdown of dialogue with the Honduran government….he questions the precedent of an institutional breakdown, but considers it important to return Honduras to the OAS,” he said. “They need to take internal measures” such as the “constitution of a truth commission, perhaps,” according to Baumbach.

Lula will defend this position at the Second Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Rio Group meeting in Mexico next week, but “it will not be a concrete proposal to return Honduras to the OAS, only a concern with the precedent set by the coup,” the spokesperson said.

Lula addressed this issue with the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, and two days later, with Mauricio Funes, President of El Salvador.
