Zelaya May Join PARLACEN

March 19th, 2010 · No Comments

PARLACEN (Central American Parliament) chairman Jacinto Suarez, has said that former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya qualified to join the organization. Zelaya could become a member “immediately” by simply showing his identification card; however, Suarez admitted that Zelaya “has said nothing of wanting accreditation”.

The political organization, based in Guatemala, requires one to have served in the post of president. Zelaya, who was deposed from the presidency of Honduras in June 2009, assumed a political office in the Caribbean subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), an appointment made by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in February.

The PARLACEN is comprised of Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic, and has 20 member countries and former presidents who hold a seat.

The other former President of Honduras, Roberto Micheletti, has stated that he has no interest in joining the Central American Parliament.
