A firefighters’ spokesperson in El Progreso relayed that a bus accident occurred on the old bridge over the Humuya River that had collapsed during the 7.1 magnitude earthquake on May 28, 2009.
Thirty-nine passengers were injured when the bus dove off the collapsed bridge on Saturday. The bus did not fall into the river, but instead landed on top of the collapsed remainder of the bridge that is still in the water, which actually averted a worse tragedy, the spokesperson said. The injured were taken to hospitals in the cities of El Progreso and San Pedro Sula.
There were four deaths, including the driver of the vehicle, 38-year-old Yelsin Garcia. Other fatalities included a 12-year-old Kevin Noe Medina; and two women yet to be identified, the police and rescue workers reported.
It was dark, and therefore Garcia did not see the signs warning drivers not to travel over the collapsed bridge, but instead use a new bridge built several months ago, the authorities said.
The bus was transporting members of an evangelical church from Tegucigalpa to La Ceiba, Honduras.

My prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives and those who injured.
