7 Foreigners with assault rifles arrested in Honduras

Crime - Honduras - 3Honduran security forces on Wednesday arrested five Colombians, a Jamaican and a Nicaraguan and seized military weapons from them, a police spokesman said.

The foreigners were arrested in Puerto Lempira, in Gracias a Dios province, in Honduras’ Caribbean region, Anibal Bacca told reporters.

Authorities seized three shotguns and six combat rifles – three M-16s and three AK-47s – from the men.

Also seized were a GPS device, a speedboat and several two-way radios, Bacca said without providing any further details.

The foreigners are presently in the custody of the National Police, which is “investigating the origin of the weapons and the use” to which they were being put, the spokesman said.

In addition, the spokesman said that Honduran authorities are asking for information from the Migration Directorate to determine if the men were in Honduras legally.
