Conclusions in ATF Team’s Investigation of Fire at Comayagua Prison Facility

TEGUCIGALPA – After completing its investigation and analysis of the site of the Tuesday, February 14, 2012 fire at the Comayagua prison facility, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms’ (ATF) International Response Team (IRT) working in conjunction with Honduran authorities from the Public Ministry, National Criminal Investigation Directorate (DNIC), and the Honduran Fire Department have determined that the cause of the fire was accidental.

Honduran Midfielder Danilo Turcios Signed

The Atlanta Silverbacks have signed Honduran midfielder Danilo Turcios, pending USSF and ITC approval, the club announced Monday.

The 33-year-old attacking midfielder comes to the Silverbacks from Honduran giants C.D. Olimpia, where Silverbacks Head Coach Alex Pineda Chacón starred for 10 seasons during his playing career.

“It’s a rare opportunity for any club to be able to bring in a player with as much quality and international experience as Danilo,” Chácon said. “I’m very familiar with him on and off the field, and I can tell you that he’ll be an incredible addition to our team in many different ways.”

USA’s ATF Will Investigate Comayagua Fire

ATF INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE TEAM TO INVESTIGATE PRISON FIRE IN HONDURAS

WASHINGTON — At the request of the Honduran government, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) today activated its International Response Team (IRT) to investigate the fire that swept through a national correctional facility in Comayagua, Honduras, killing more than 350 inmates. The ATF IRT provides technical and forensic assistance and oversight worldwide in arson and explosives investigations.

At approximately 10:50 p.m. Tuesday a blaze swept through the prison which housed approximately 850 inmates. The Honduran government requested ATF’s expertise through the Department of State to determine the cause of the fire. The ATF lead element of the team will arrive today and begin reconstructing the scene, identifying the origin of the fire, conducting interviews, and sifting through debris to obtain evidence related to the blaze.

The ATF IRT is composed of veteran special agents who have post blast and fire origin–and–cause expertise; forensic chemists; explosives enforcement officers; fire protection and electrical engineers; accelerant detection canines; explosives detection canines; intelligence support, computer forensic support and forensic audit support. Each team assembled and deployed is designed to best accommodate the specific incident.
