Doubtful Elections Will Take Place Sooner

The Tribunal Supremo Electoral, the office in charge of voting, strongly opposes the proposal for early elections as it would be economically, politically and legally difficult to do in Honduras. There are many aspects to be taken into account in implementing a resolution of this type.

It would limit the participation of new citizens, and hinder their right to vote, as they would not have adequate time to receive their identity card card or update their address. There would be little time to train people organizing the voting areas and, consequently, would jeopardize the ideal shape and structure which ensures efficiency and transparency of the voting process. Additionally, it would require an additional one hundred million lempiras.

The TSE recommends that before any decision is made to move the elections forward, it should be agreed upon with the major participants of the electoral process, through consultation with the organizations and their candidates, at least at the presidential level.

However, the Supreme Electoral Court President, Saul Escobar, told reporters that the agency will examine the proposal to advance the general elections scheduled for November 29th.

The Supreme Court and the Public Ministry are also studying the Arias proposal.
