Exports to the European Union on the Rise

The export of nontraditional products from Honduras to the European Union (EU), Central America, and Asia rose 83 percent during the first five months of the year, according to a report provided by authorities of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (SIC).

Farmed shrimp is among the largest non-traditional products exported from Honduras the European Union.

As of May, the country received 1.161 million Lempiras in foreign exchange earnings, not including exports to the United States, which is the largest trading partner within the Free Trade Agreement between Central America and the Dominican Republic (DR-CAFTA).

According to the director of the productive areas, Emelinda Lara, this is the result of hard work. Following the political crisis, the producers focused their efforts on exportation to Europe and Central America.

The non-traditional products marketed to the European Union include shrimp, melon, and snuff. Central American non-traditional exports include tomatoes, soap, bananas and dairy products.

The cultivation of coffee showed a rise of 4.2 percent. This was the result of an improved demand for this product, and higher international prices due to the climate change and flooding in the coffee regions of Colombia.

Fishing exports also displayed a growth of 44.2 percent, due to a rise in the production of farmed shrimp (58%).
