Fire in Tocoa – Update

A full-blown fire consumed a hardware store last night in the commercial center of Tocoa. “Hardware Javier” was owned by Javier Cerrato. The blaze threatened to spread to other businesses, when firefighters arrived.

The hardware store is one of the largest businesses in the complex, and had many flammable materials stored. Several explosions were heard as the fire consumed paint and other items. Executives at Banco de Occidente evacuated employees because the fire came close to the bank.

Rolando Ruiz, head of the Fire Department, said they are still unclear what caused the incident.

The Preventive Police cordoned off the area to prevent criminals from taking advantage of the evacuated buildings.
