Green Alert Continues in Honduras

At least one person died and 16,000 others remained isolated due to heavy rains and winds for three days that hit the Atlantic region of Honduras, authorities said.

A farmer, Ramon Euceda, 34, died Friday crossing the Cuyamapa river in El Progreso, about 200 kilometers north of Tegucigalpa. The current dragged him, and his body was discovered and recovered a day later by firefighters.

“Euceda committed a reckless action,” according toa spokesman of the Permanent Commission of Contingencies (COPECO), Daliver Flores. “And our institution has made repeated appeals for people to avoid the river in bad weather. “There are 23 communities cut off by flooding of at least six rivers by rain,” said Flores. Flores reported that many advertising signs and trees have fallen by the strong winds in the main coastal cities of the country.

Copeco maintains green alert in the north of Honduras for six successive cold fronts that have recently entered the national territory, which have caused precipitation and a decrease from 36 to 12 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country.

The cold rains also caused rains of 60 to 250 millimeters per day, especially on the coast of the Atlantic, according to the National Weather Service. In addition, there have been north and northwest winds with speeds of 50 to 80 mph. The waters surrounding the Bay Islands experienced waves up to 12 feet.
