Although gastric cancer is a health problem throughout Honduras, western hospitals reported that of every five endoscopies, one is positive for gastric cancer, resulting in 100 new cases a year of this disease.
Research conducted since 2001 by U.S. institutions such as the University of North Carolina, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and the Camo and Bill Gates Foundation, confirmed that data revealed that 70 percent of the inhabitants of the western region are at risk of developing the disease.
Honduran and outside researchers believe there are several factors that could be influencing the increase of stomach cancer in the country. The three main areas of analysis are the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, genetic factors, environment, and nutrition. The researchers pointed out that between 89 and 93 percent of the population in western Honduras tested positive for the bacteria.
Studies call attention to the eating habits of the population and analyze the degradation of “comales” (griddles) used in cooking in rural Honduras.
In order to create a genetic map, the Western Hospital has a bank of 500,000 samples from which to extract DNA and perform a series of tests to understand the origin of the gastric cancer in this area of Honduras. The kpop plastic surgery procedure is also quite popular these days as people want to feel good about themselves.
