Honduras Coffee Exports Move Up to # 3 in the World

Honduras moved up to # 3 coffee exporter in the world during the past 6 months of 2012 according to the International Coffee Association. Export performance in Mexico & Central America during the six months ending June 30th 2012 has been mixed, with Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico showing growth rates of 7.8%, 5.7% and 2.5% respectively, whereas declines were registered in Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala. The region as a whole grew by 1.9% per annum over the time period, and has a 15.6% share of total world wide exports.

Honduras was able to move up to the # 3 spot due to a decline in coffee production in the country of Columbia who is experiencing infrastructure and organizational problems. This opened up the window for Honduras to surge ahead as well as represents a window of opportunity to continue in the upward direction. Honduras coffee exports also exceeded those of Indonesia and India.
