Honduras coffee exports more than double in November 2014

Coffee exports from Honduras, Central America’s top producer, more than doubled in November from the same month last year, helped by a rise in coffee prices worldwide, industry officials said on Monday.

Coffee exports in November, the second month of the 2014-15 harvesting season, totaled 104,611.50 60-kg bags, up 116.5 percent from 48,327.94 in the previous period, according to preliminary data from national coffee institute IHCAFE.

“Coffee started to come in greater quantities in November, stimulated by better prices on the international market,” IHCAFE Vice President Danilo Sierra told Reuters.

Honduras expects to export 4.83 million bags during the 2014-15 season, compared with 4.18 million bags shipped during the 2013-14 season.

Over the past couple of seasons, an outbreak of the tree-killing fungus roya, also known as leaf rust, has depressed output across Central America and Mexico, which together produce about one-fifth of the world’s arabica beans.
