Honduras Expects Big Harvest

Honduras is expecting a bigger sugar harvest this season as farmers increase planted areas spurred by strong prices, the country’s producers group said on Thursday.

The small Central American country will produce 431,000
tonnes of sugar in the upcoming harvest, which begins in
November, 6.4 percent more than in the current cycle which is coming to a close this month.

Honduras says it can keep up higher levels of production in
coming years as farm practices improve.

“Output is up because of a slight increase in cultivated
land and improved equipment,” Carlos Melara, the head of the Honduras’ national sugar producers association told Reuters.

Honduran exports in 2010/11 are expected to reach 139,330 tonnes, up 12.6 percent from the previous cycle. Some 19,330 tonnes of sugar will be shipped to the United States and 120,000 tonnes to the global market. Honduras does not send sugar to Mexico, which is facing a shortfall this season, because it falls outside the rules of a regional trade deal.
