U.S. Official to Visit Honduras

Marie Otero, the Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs in the United States will travel to Tegucigalpa, Honduras from August 3rd to 4th, the State Department announced today.

Ms. Otero will meet with senior Honduran government officials, human rights advocates, members of civil society, and the business community.

The Under Secretary will focus on issues such as democratic governance, human rights, and women’s empowerment. Global issues related to economic development, investment, and renewable energy are also on the agenda.

Charges Dropped for Zelaya

Honduran Judge Humberto Palacios has dropped abuse of power charges against ousted President Manuel Zelaya. But the order doesn’t affect other charges pending against the ex-leader.

Judge Humberto Palacios says he dismissed two charges because of an amnesty approved by congress in January for Zelaya and all those involved in his removal from power.

Palacios said Friday the charges involved the renting of a building for the state-run electricity company when Zelaya was president.

Zelaya still faces charges of fraud, usurping other institutions’ powers and falsifying documents.

Ortega Boycotts SICA Over Honduras

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega told the press that he skipped the Central American Integration System (SICA) meeting this week because it was designed and promoted by the United States. He questioned why the U.S. has not closed its military base in Palmerola, Honduras, which he said was instrumental in the coup that ousted then-President Manuel Zelaya last year.

He called the effort to reintegrate Honduras into the regional organization “ridiculous” and harmful to the unity of Central America.
