Honduran Soccer Player Wins Scholarship

White Bear Lake’s Carlos Contreras grew up playing soccer in the streets of Honduras, so when its national team qualified for the 2010 World Cup for only the second time, he was pretty excited. That didn’t last long.

“They went down there and didn’t even score a goal,” Contreras said. “So that was disappointing.”

Maybe they could have used a future version of the 5-9 midfielder who has twice earned all-state, all-metro, all-region and all-conference awards at White Bear Lake. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America also named him a high school All-America in 2008.

Andy Najar Wanted in Honduras

In the nation’s capital, he’s a shy 17-year-old who misses hanging out with friends at high school. In Central America, he’s fast becoming the subject of an angst-ridden potential tug of war between Honduras and the United States.

Andy Najar is D.C. United’s latest teen sensation, the lone bright spot on the worst team in MLS. The rookie midfielder who came up through the club’s youth academy leads United with three goals in league play and has earned the catchy nickname “Pequeno Guerrero” or “Little Warrior” from coach Kurt Onalfo.

Seleccion Member at Home in Denver, Colorado

Roger Espinoza enjoyed the best dinner he has had since returning home from the World Cup in South Africa.

The menu included his mother’s Honduran cuisine — Espinoza’s favorite — and, even better, family time.

“We haven’t seen him for six months, so we were happy to see him even if it was only for a short time,” said Espinoza’s sister, Jasmin.

The Kansas City Wizards midfielder played in front of his personal cheering section Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park against the Colorado Rapids — reminiscent of when he played for Regis Jesuit High School five years ago. Espinoza made rounds between practice Thursday and Friday, catching up with family members and friends a few weeks after he represented Honduras in the World Cup.
