La Ceiba Taxi Drivers Protest

Angered by the sudden issue of 120 new taxi numbers, drivers staged protests yesterday at the Regional Transportation office. Police officers arrived on the scene to open a path for citizens to get through.

Antonio Contreras, former Regional Director of Transportation, said the numbers of taxis that circulate at this time are legal. Henry Alvarez, representative of the taxi drivers, said they are requesting three things, including the immediate cancellation of the numbers given. They have asked Congress to investigate the case.

12th Cold Front of the Season

Severe weather struck Honduras last night. High winds of 70km per hour caused damage to trees and electrical lines, affecting at least 80 families.

The Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO) said this is the 12th cold front of the season, and with it came strong winds, cool temperatures, and forceful rains.

The National Energy Company (ENEE), hopes to restore the service to the hospital Mario Catarino Rivas and the Independent National University of Honduras in the Sula Valley by 4:00 p.m. today. Many other schools were forced to suspend classes due to the energy outages. Two electrical posts in the free zone of Puerto Cortes succumbed to strong winds, leaving communities such as Choloma, and Santa Cruz of Yojoa without electricity.

Transportation Security for the Capital

The Minister of Soptravi, Miguel Pastor, announced that tonight a new security program will begin for the protection of traveling Honduran citizens, tourists, and students in the capital. The plan, which will be implemented between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm, will include most of the routes serviced by public transportation vehicles, especially those who have reported the highest crime rates.

Minister Pastor said they will be coordinating with the Ministry of Security and transportation leaders, and will be giving protection for “internal and external” users. Each transportation unit will have at least one armed police officer on board who is in communication with the other officers on other buses. In cases where a policeman cannot be aboard, the bus will be escorted by a patrol unit.

Day of the Virgin of Suyapa

Thousands of faithful Hondurans will be traveling to the shrine of the Virgin of Suyapa today to honor “La Morenita”. The House of the Virgin of Suyapa is already overflowing with visitors waiting to kneel before her altar.

The main road, which leads from the entrance to the Sanctuary to the Village of Suyapa is closed to cars, so that traffic can be directed to facilitate the people visiting.
The National Traffic Directorate (DNT) and National Police have had 300 troops engaged to protect the people and property of the faithful, as well as the merchants.
