Honduras Infastructure Badly Damaged

The already deteriorated road network in Honduras has been further affected after the constant rains that hit the country. There are many areas that have been cut off by landslides and floods, due to the accumulation of water in the soil.

Miguel Pastor, head of the Department of Public Works, Transportation and Housing (Soptravi) said this morning that at least 80% of the road network in Honduras is damaged; and a heavy investment will be required for its rehabilitation.

The official said that they are making an effort to meet the demands of producers who have been affected by the lack of roads, especially in northwestern, eastern and southern Honduras.

Honduras – Guatemala Bridge Out

Cut off from the rest of the Country

Yesterday morning, strong currents brought down the Motagua River bridge, leaving Honduras and Guatemala totally cutoff from one another.

Omoa Mayor, Ricardo Alvarado, expressed concern about the large impact on trade, tourism and Honduras’ economy that the damaged bridge will have. This is the only point where vehicles are driven to complete trade between both countries. Mayor Alvarado said he has already communicated with Mayor David Pineda of Puerto Barrios, in Guatemala, who said that they are speaking with the country’s President, Álvaro Colom, to start work on a temporary bridge.

Heavy Rains Expected for Three More Days

The authorities of the Permanent Contingency Commission, (Copeco), recommend that citizens evacuate the areas at risk, as the rainy weather will continue intensively over the next three days.

A red alert is in effect, and the Honduras National Weather Service reported that areas where the rains will be more intense are the southeast, southwest and central parts of the country. This includes El Paraíso, Valle, Comayagua, La Paz, Choluteca, Francisco Morazán, Intibucá, Lempira, Ocotepeque, Copán and Santa Bárbara. There is also a possibility of more rain in some municipalities of Valle de Sula.
