Honduras President met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has met U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement William Brownfield to discuss security issues and the fight against corruption, officials said.

“Brownfield congratulated Honduras on the signing of a cooperation agreement in good faith to promote transparency, fight corruption and strengthen integrity systems with Transparency International,”

Brownfield “congratulated President Hernandez on behalf of the U.S. government for advances in security and the decision to confront the scourge of drug trafficking,” said Honduran Presidency Minister Reinaldo Sanchez said.

Brownfield was also satisfied with the achievements of the Hernandez administration in just nine months, Sanchez said.

The U.S. diplomat reiterated that the United States would continue to work with Honduras to successfully fight the problem of drug trafficking.

Sanchez said that Brownfield applauded the measures taken by the Honduran government to combat corruption.

“Brownfield congratulated Honduras on the signing of a cooperation agreement in good faith to promote transparency, fight corruption and strengthen integrity systems with Transparency International,” Sanchez said.

The two officials also discussed the humanitarian crusade for the thousands of Central American children who make the dangerous journey to the United States to unite with their parents, the presidential palace said in a statement.

Brownfield arrived in Honduras on the eve of a visit by U.S. State Department Counselor Thomas Shannon to discuss security, governance and economic prosperity as part of a Central American tour that includes Guatemala and El Salvador.
