Honduras Seizes Plane from Mexico in La Ceiba

Honduras Seizes Plane from Mexico in La CeibaHonduras authorities seized a plane with Mexican registration that arrived at Golosón airport in the city of La Ceiba from Mexico with irregular documents, and arrested two Mexican pilots yesterday, an official source said.

Honduran Defense Minister Marlon Pascua told reporters that the aircraft suspiciously landed Sunday afternoon, and was bound for Venezuela. It is presumed that the aircraft intended to refuel in La Ceiba, according to the logic of the flight plan from Toluca, Mexico.

The small aircraft had “no seats”, and there was no cargo of any kind, but presumably it could “carry drugs or money,” Pascua said.

The Defense Minister said there is a possibility that the plane “had made a clandestine landing on a runway”, and so he decided to “stop the pilots and confiscate the plane”.  A canine unit detected traces of drugs, so the plane underwent chemical testing, and today lab results confirmed the suspicion that illicit substances had been inside.  The tires of the aircraft indicated a recent landing prior to La Ceiba.

The two pilots contested that they were simply paid to fly the plane and leave it for someone else they did not know to pick up. The pilots were released the same evening; but the investigation is ongoing,” according to  authorities.
