Honduras Tax Amnesty to be Extended

Delinquent taxpayers may have a new deadline of December 15th to catch up on paying taxes, unpaid fines or surcharges.

Congress on Tuesday plans to approve a decree extending the deadline for payment of such taxes, and may stretch it to December 31st. This includes delinquent taxes to both the Executive Directorate of Revenue (DEI) and with the municipalities, for real estate, improvements and contributions, sales taxes and other services.

In the case of DEI, the largest outstanding debts are the payments for vehicles. Most taxpayers failed to pay their debts on time through September this 30th of this year. According to the projections of the DEI, the amnesty should have led to payments by Sept. 30th of about 500 million Lempiras, but they only received 250 million.

The amnesty includes income tax, sales tax and vehicle registration, among others, also taxes charged by municipalities.

“This amnesty also benefits the State because people can pay their debts, and the State can receive the money it needs for its operational costs,” according to Deputy Francisco Rivera, chairman of the Budget Committee II. He acknowledged that this extension occurs “because people did not pay due to the crisis.”
