Hundreds of families affected because of floods

Over 425 families affected, 16 houses destroyed, 85 flooded and over 70 hectares of corn and bean harvest lost is the result of the overflowing of the Hato River in Jutiapa, El Paraiso.

The mayor of this town confirmed the destruction of 16 houses and 33 more damaged that could collapse due to the fragility of the construction.

Out of 850 houses in this area, over 5% are flooded and approximately 425 families are victims of the flooding and in need of attention.

Members of the Police department and members of rescue teams worked all day and night Thursday and Friday helping all of the victims and having to force people to leave their houses to avoid further damages.

After going thru the most affected areas, the mayor met with different sectors of the community to start the preliminary evaluations and look for the mechanisms to help the victims who lost their homes and to those who cannot return to their homes because of the flooding.

The most affected areas are Quebrada Onda, El Estero, the lower part of Jutiapa, Guanacaste, Habillal, Higueral and other surrounding communities.

Meanwhile, in Monjaras, Marcovia department of Choluteca, some 200 families where also victims of the floods after the Choluteca river overflowed.

The mayor of Monjaras, Marcovia, confirmed that over six communities in this town are flooded where families are feeling the effects of the intense rain from the past few days.

The mayor informed that other than the six communities in Monjaras, there are other sectors that are also flooded such as El Bosque, El Palenque, Los Llanitos, Los Mangles where another 200 families have been affected by the floods.

The levels of the water from the Choluteca River are alarming, because of this the authorities recommend for the populations to remain alert and to start evacuating their homes to avoid further damages.
