UNAH Campaigns Against Leptospirosis

Students of the National Autonomous University of Honduras [UNAH], are promoting a campaign to prevent leptospirosis after a leptospirosis outbreak infected 27 Hondurans and killed a 10-year-old child in the department of Choluteca.

Journalism students are determined to make the public aware of the threat posed by the bacterial disease. The purpose of the campaign is to educate students and youth in cleaning up schools and homes in order to avoid the proliferation of rodents, whose urine transmits the disease to human beings.

Several neighboring Central American countries are trying to stop the infections as well. The disease has spread because of the recent floods and heavy rains. Nicaragua is the nation worst hit, with 16 deaths and 146 infections.
