Lung Cancer Cases Double in Honduras

News that Cases of lung cancer in Honduras doubled in recent years was revealed earlier this week by the Head of the Department of Pneumology at the Chest Suyapa Sosa Hospital. This fact even though Cigarette consumption in Honduras has experienced a 30% decline.

The specialist stated that about 70 cases a year were diagnosed before in the country and today there have been over 200 reported.

According to Sosa, lung cancer is detected in most of the patients when it is already at an advanced stage, although there are new therapies that prolong and improve the quality of life for them. Diagnosis test can cost up to $3,000 per case.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that lung cancer is responsible for more deaths globally each year, followed by liver, stomach and colon cancer.

WHO also indicated that tobacco use is the most important risk factor, and the cause of about 70 percent of deaths due to this type of cancer.
