Mara 13 Gang Leader Busted in Honduras

Ammunition, bullet proof vests, police uniforms and a high power bomb were seized at 3:30 p.m. yesterday from a home in the village of Ocotillo. The surprise raid was coordinated by agents of the DNIC and Preventive Police, and also led to the capture of Fabricio Cabrera, 28, a native of that town, who is thought to be the head of the Ocotillo branch of the Mara Salvatrucha (commonly abbreviated as MS, Mara, and MS-13) gang.

MS13 is the most dangerous gang in the world.

Cabrera had a criminal record for possession of illegal firearms, conspiracy, and drug trafficking. Only a year ago, he was on trial and had preliminary injunctions which required him to present himself at court once a week.

The confiscated munitions included 520 bullets, some of which were for AK-47’s, a M-50 rifle, and a homemade bomb. Also found were 11 bulletproof vests, 16 police uniforms, caps, and 13 car license plates. The plates had been altered, combining two plates to create a new number, making it difficult for the authorities to identify the owners.

Security Minister Óscar Álvarez, arrived on the scene accompanied by Deputy Minister Armando Calidonio and city police chiefs. The group congratulated the officers for their spirit and the new attitudes displayed in working with a wide field of intelligence in all branches of the police.

Minister Álvarez said that law enforcement anticipated other operators of justice to put forth an effort equal to or greater than the police, in order to restore public confidence in the authorities. Police expect the criminals to be fully punished by the law, ending impunity and discouraging offenders from continuing to live a life of crime.

The Minister met face to face with the alleged gang leader, and ensured that this is just the first step, and promised that before the end of the year, other areas such as Chamelecón, Rivera Hernández and Suazo Córdova will be free of gangs.

Security Minister Óscar Álvarez took advantage of the opportunity to ask the public to fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities in order to achieve total security for all of society.
