New Peace Campaign in Capital

The United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) and the Mayor of Tegucigalpa, yesterday launched a new campaign aimed at combating violence in the capital.

The campaign, “Put yourself in their place, resist violence” was created to encourage a culture of peace and move citizens to reflect upon their behavior.
Supporters believe each person can contribute one grain of sand, by putting themselves in the other person’s shoes, and thus creating a less violent society.

A series of events took place in the Olympic Village Sports Complex, with the participation of representatives of institutions involved in training and guiding Honduran youth. Representation spanned across civil society, the private sector, law enforcement, and City Hall, with UNDP, Spanish Cooperation, Swedish Cooperation, and with young people in youth networks who have joined this campaign in hopes of achieving a capital free of violence.

The campaign also falls within the Capital Plan 450, which seeks to educate the population, especially adolescents, youngsters and parents, on different situations where they may encounter conflict, and how to diffuse it.

The overall goal is to achieve a capital where public places, streets, plazas, markets, parks, sports centers, as well as schools and colleges, live at peace with one another. The participants of yesterday’s events will work together to promote a culture of peace and positive change without violence.
