Possible Amnesty for Tax Payers

The Honduran Council of Private Enterprise (COHEP), will support the adoption of a tax amnesty for businesses and individuals to pay taxes owed to the state. The tax amnesty will only address the payment of penalties, surcharges, and interest in arrears.

Private companies are hopeful that Congress approves a tax amnesty for all those companies that have been affected by the economic crisis and could not pay their taxes.

“It would be a sensible step, an amnesty would encourage the payments, taking into account that income and tax revenues fell by more than five billion lempiras,” said the adviser of COHEP, Norman Garcia.

He explained that the tax amnesty does not forgive what a business owes in taxes, but the penalties, fines and default interest through payment plans.

“This must be not only for businesses, but individuals who stopped because they could not pay. The state needs to be paid, and is willing to sacrifice the fines or surcharges.” he said.

Executive Directorate of Revenue (DEI), the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the National Congress President, Juan Orlando Hernandez, and all of congress will discuss the possibility of approving the measure in order to facilitate the collection of taxes.
