Possible Tax Increase on Alcohol and Cigarettes

With the goal of increasing revenue collection through taxation, the Finance Ministry sent a decree to Congress that includes increasing the sales tax on alcoholic beverages and cigarettes.

In this regard, the Finance Minister Gabriela Nunez said the decree will be sent to Congress for members to vote on, and if approved, put into effect as soon as possible.

The decree includes a tax increase on alcoholic beverages and fermented beverages, as well as snuff produced in the country. The taxes will be defined through a table of charges to be applied each year based on inflation, she said.

Also with the aim of favoring the poorest people, provided in the bill would be a debt cancellation for those citizens who have outstanding debts to the State not exceeding two thousand Lempiras, and dating from December 31, 2008.

The decree also provides that persons who have not paid their vehicle registration can do so free of fines before December 31st of this year.

The official said that this measure is intended to raise about 100 billion dollars per year once the decree has been made law and implemented

“Public finances are required to attend many challenges and we are looking for greater tax equity and social justice,” she said.

I thought that “no nex taxes for the poor” was part of the new economic plan.

I did not know that poor people in Honduras do not drink and smoke, that is remarkable, it must be a country where most people are healthy then since those two drugs are some of the worst causants of cancer and other body destroying disceaces.

They are so damaging to the health of humans that in the USA they tax them both as a way to slow down their use, since later on the government has to foot the bill to pay for most of the treatment of those that become sick.

I hope that we are not trying to imitate for the wrong reasons, I say these because if memory serves me right, the Ministry of Labor in Honduras saw the need to implement 14 months of salary paid to the labor force (instead of monthly raises) because the people drink their pay away as they get paid, so a raise would not guarantee that the families would have money for Christmas (not being sarcastic now, it is true, that was their reasoning)

So now, the government plans to tax them?

Honduras needs more than just new leaders, it needs a new kind of leaders.

This is when to start fixing that country, it is actually something excellent for people to have the right to make choices, it would be wonderful if they would make excellent choices also.

And yes, you are right, I do not believe in attempting to cover the sun with your thumb, for that is just an optical “illusion”.

Honduras would do great for it self if we stop trying to re-invent the wheel and start using it instead, there are many great ideas out there that we could and need to copy right away.
