President Lobo and US President Obama Will Attend Heads of State Summit

The President of Honduras will attend the Heads of State Summit for member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) being held tomorrow in the city of San Jose, Costa Rica.  The summit’s focus is expected to be drug trafficking and trade, and will feature the participation of U.S. President Barack Obama.

President Porfirio Lobo Sosa plans to propose to his American counterpart the renewal and enlargement of the support to the region to combat drug trafficking and organized crime, and the reworking of the dynamics of the trade issue.
“We are asking them to focus on Central America.  We need strong support from the Government of the United States to attack the common drug enemy, since unfortunately, Honduras and countries in the region, have deaths in a war that we did not start and repudiate, so it is time to renew the policy of mutual cooperation and to get together on this sensitive topic,” said President Lobo.

Also, the Honduran President formally asks Obama for real immigration reform that favors all compatriots residing in this country to the North.

The summit will be chaired by the Costa Rican president, Laura Chinchilla.   Confirmed to attend are the presidents of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes; Guatemala, Otto Perez Molina; Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega; Panama, Ricardo Martinelli; Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina; and the Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Oliver Barrow.

President Lobo will be accompanied by the new Honduran National Commissioner for Defense and Security and Security Minister, Arturo Corrales, among other officials.
