Real Honduras triumphs in Copa Latina soccer

Holding a one-goal lead midway through the second half, Real Honduras thwarted any hopes of an Estudiantes de Guaya comeback with two quick strikes.

Robert Caseres scored in the 65th minute, and Lenin Puerto followed with a penalty-kick conversion five minutes later to secure Real Honduras’ 3-0 victory in a Copa Latina second-round match Sunday at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah.

The victory advances Real Honduras to the tournament quarterfinals against Real Espana next Sunday.

Earlier, Seleccion Peru held off Honduras Heat’s late rally and advanced with a 2-1 victory.

Milton Marquillo and Remy Salazar scored in an 11-minute span in the first half to give Peru a 2-0 lead.

Honduras Heat’s Jorge Zapata scored with a minute remaining in the match, reducing the Peru advantage. Peru pressured the Honduras Heat defense through stoppage time but failed to score the equalizer.

Peru will play Honduras 5 Stars in a quarterfinal match next Sunday.

In other matches:
