Red Alert for 5 departments in Honduras

The COPECO authorities declared red alert in several departments of the Honduran territory due to the affluence of two low pressure systems over the Gulf of Honduras and southeast of El Salvador.

The heavy rains of the past few days have left three deaths and four missing persons. COPECO declared red alert for 24 hours and could be extended if necessary; the areas under red alert are Pimienta, Potrerillos, Villanueva, San Manuel, Choloma and Puerto Cortes in Cortes; Tela, Atlantida; El Progreso, Santa Rita and El Negrito, Yoro; as well as Choluteca and Valle.

Meanwhile, Copan, Ocotepeque, Lempira, Intibuca, Santa Barbara, Yoro, Comayagua, La Paz, Francisco Morazan, El Paraiso and Olancho are under yellow alert; while the rest of the country is under no alert.

Carlos Gonszales who is the sub-commissioner of COPECO informed they have registered landslides and significant increase of volume in the Rivers.

There are 10 communities in Choloma that are isolated due to landfalls and other damages to the main access roads.

According to reports from the National Meteorological Service of Honduras, the rains will continue for 48 more hours in most of the country due to the influence of two low pressure systems; one over the gulf of Honduras and another southeast of El Salvador.

In Morazan, Yoro, there are over 40 communities isolated. Among them are Nueva Esperanza, Mojaman, Cuevitas, El Porvenir and Camalote.

There have been over 17 thousand evacuated persons registered around the country; authorities strongly recommend everyone to follow their instructions in case of evacuations.
