Fabio Lobo Lobo, son of Porfirio Lobo, was arrested on May 20 in a Haitian operation alongside the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

Lobo was president of Honduras from 2010 to 2014 during which he pledged to fight organised crime.

His son is scheduled to appear in court in upstate New York Friday, Honduras said in a statement on Thursday.

Lobo said he tried to raise his son correctly, but if Fabio is “innocent he will support him and if he is guilty he will be accountable to the law.”

Lobo said Thursday in an interview with the government’s Channel 8 television that he was facing a situation that he would never wish on any parent.

“I cannot say that he is guilty; I cannot say that he is not,” Lobo said.

“Fabio is not a child,” Lobo added. “He is a man with a family and must answer for his actions.”

Lobo said he hopes his son can prove his innocence. As a father, he added, he is very hurt.

Current Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez has launched an offensive against drug traffickers whom he holds responsible for the massive murder rate in the country.

Porfirio Lobo served as Honduras’ president from 2010 to 2014. He was elected following a coup that removed Manuel Zelaya from the presidency in 2009.
