On Wednesday Spain’s King Felipe VI praised Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez and promised US$189 million to the Central American nation. The funds will be invested into additional development projects in Honduras over the next five years said Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.

Spain’s King Felipe VI on Wednesday praised visiting Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez Alvarado for his determination to combat drug trafficking, improve public safety and promote economic growth.

“You will always have the support of Spain,” King Felipe said before a luncheon at Madrid’s Royal Palace for the Honduran president and his wife, Ana Garcia.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and three of his ministers, as well as officials, business leaders and representatives of civil society along with members of the Honduran community in Spain attended the luncheon.

Hernandez said that the objective of his trip was to promote the creation of business partnerships and to faciliate the growing interest of Spanish companies in the Central American nation. Felipe VI echoed that Honduras is a “priority” country for Spanish aid.

Hernandez also advocated for the investment of Honduras’ US$80 million debt to Spain into Comayagua‘s Palmerola airport.
