FUNAZUCAR joins this programme, which ensures proper nutrition for children under 5 years, particularly in the critical period of the first 1000 days of life, pregnant women and women in the lactation period – with a donation of product to be distributed in an equitable way to eight departments of the country.

The provided sugar is included as part of the food ration that the WFP delivers to the vulnerable population of 29 municipalities in the departments of Choluteca, Valle, El Paraiso, Francisco Morazan, La Paz, Intibuca, Santa Barbara and Lempira.

For the delivery of the donation an agreement signing ceremony took place between FUNAZUCAR and WFP. Robert Vinelli, FUNAZUCAR’s President, and Pasqualina Di Sirio, WFP Representative, formalized the annual agreement for the benefit of the most vulnerable groups.

“We have found in WFP the perfect partner to bring support to the communities where we have sugar mills. For nine years in a row we have been providing a significant contribution to help reduce malnutrition, especially among children under 5 years old, and we are willing to continue with our support,” said Robert Vinelli, President of FUNAZUCAR.

Meanwhile, Pasqualina Di Sirio explained that the model of care is based on the combination of a comprehensive package that includes medical care with an emphasis on nutritional status assessment, food and nutrition education and improved practices of maternal and child health care with food assistance.

She said that mothers receive a monthly take-home ration to meet the daily nutritional needs of the children. This strategy has proved to be effective to ensure the prevention of malnutrition. “These kinds of partnerships with the private sector helps to strengthen WFP’s programmes and projects and reach more people in Honduras,” she said.

FUNAZUCAR, a private organization, has the corporate social responsibility to support the Honduran children under 5 years. With WFP, it makes an effort to promote health and nutrition and to fight against malnutrition and hunger among Honduras’ children, especially in the areas where FUNAZUCAR operates.
