The former head of the Joint Chiefs, retired General Romeo Vasquez Velasquez, was sworn in yesterday afternoon as Hondutel’s manager. The assistant manager, Jesus Mejia, was also sworn in.
Just 12 days after his removal as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, General Romeo Vasquez Velasquez was appointed as manager of Hondutel, a government owned company that was pushed to the brink of bankruptcy by previous governments. Hondutel lost over 80,000 customers in 2009.

This morning the lawyer for Hondutel ex-executive Marcelo Chimirri, Rossel Barralaga, was killed in the Miraflores neighborhood of Tegucigalpa, Honduran officials confirmed.
Barralaga served as a counsel of former manager of the Honduran Telecommunications Company, Hondutel, Marcelo Chimirri, died from a bullet wound inflicted by an individual who was traveling by motorcycle.
According to police reports, the lawyer of 47 years was driving in his vehicle at the time of the crime; his lifeless body was found inside the car. Barralaga’s body was taken to the morgue, and shortly thereafter, his family had him transferred to his hometown of Tocoa, Columbus, in northern Honduras.

The former manager of the Honduran Telecommunications Company, Hondutel received a sentence of four years’ imprisonment.
Marcelo Antonio Chimirri Castro was found “responsible for the crime of abuse of authority against the public administration and will serve a sentence of four years (4) imprisonment,” reads the decision by judges Julissa Aguilar, Rosaminda Velasquez and Jocelyn Donaire.
Chimirri was not ordered to pay any money for the damage he caused to the finances of Hondutel; however, the judges decided yesterday that while Chimirri is in prison, he will have to perform public service labor within the institution. This ensures that Chimirri will no longer remain locked in his cell, but will be forced to interact with other inmates.

The former manager of Hondutel, Marcelo Chimirri, is expected to hear his sentence announced in the courts today.
Chimirri was charged by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor of the crime of abuse of authority and found guilty, but acquitted on charges of fraud. The trial court set the hearing for sentencing today. The Criminal Code outlines that for the crime of abuse of authority, one would serve from three to six years imprisonment; it is expected that the prosecution would seek the maximum.
