Zelaya Not Meeting in Dominican Today

Dominican President Leonel Fernandez told reporters he expected Zelaya and President-elect Porfirio Lobo to meet in Santo Domingo on Monday to talk about ways for resolving the political crisis.

Information minister, Rene Zepeda, however, said the interim government had not received a petition from Zelaya , nor from officials in the Dominican Republic asking that Zelaya be granted safe passage to leave the country.

Lobo, who says he wants to start a national reconciliation process once he takes office, and that he supports granting amnesty both to Zelaya and to all of those involved in the coup.

Valenzuela Comments on Honduras

“We’re disappointed by this decision since the United States had hoped the Congress would have approved his return,” so said Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Arturo Valenzuela.

“The United States will continue to work with Honduran and international partners to help fulfill our overarching goal of supporting the restoration of democratic and constitutional order,” said Valenzuela. “We are encouraged by the strong call for national reconciliation made by President-elect Pepe Lobo, which also marks an important step in that direction.”

Zelaya Will Not Be Reinstated

The decisive tally is 65 in favor of not reinstating Zelaya, and 8 against. Even if the rest of the 128 congress people voted to reinstate him, he would only have 63 votes.

Therefore, Mr. Manuel Zelaya Rosales will not be restored to the presidency in Honduras.
