Heavy Rains Expected for Three More Days

The authorities of the Permanent Contingency Commission, (Copeco), recommend that citizens evacuate the areas at risk, as the rainy weather will continue intensively over the next three days.

A red alert is in effect, and the Honduras National Weather Service reported that areas where the rains will be more intense are the southeast, southwest and central parts of the country. This includes El Paraíso, Valle, Comayagua, La Paz, Choluteca, Francisco Morazán, Intibucá, Lempira, Ocotepeque, Copán and Santa Bárbara. There is also a possibility of more rain in some municipalities of Valle de Sula.

Strikers Caused Road Delays

Thousands of Honduran workers marched Wednesday in major Honduras cities to demand an increase in the minimum wage and show solidarity with teachers who want the government to pay more than $200 million in contributions to a pension and benefits fund, past-due from the government of Manual Zelaya.

The minimum wage, currently 5,500 lempiras ($290) a month, was supposed to go up in April, but the hike was put off due to to negotiation breakdowns with the CUTH labor federation. CUTH is calling for a 30 percent increase, but Honduran unions say they are prepared to negotiate with the government on the exact figure.

$284,000 Seized at San Pedro Airport

Honduras National Police seized four suitcases this morning at the Ramon Villeda Morales Airport in San Pedro Sula. One of the cases contained 142 packages with two thousand dollars inside of each, equivalent to about $284,000.

According to preliminary information, the owners of the luggage are a Venezuelan and a Panamanian, who entered the country on July 10th, and stayed at a hotel in the city.

Northern Police Commissioner, Juan López Róchez, said that inside the suitcases were found clothing and money, the total of which is not yet known because they are still in the process of counting.
