Former Military Commanders Exonerated

The Supreme Court of Honduras has acquited the military commanders involved in ushering former President Manuel Zelaya Rosales out of the country on June 28, 2009.

In a twelve – three vote, the Judges of the Supreme Court of Justice, (CSJ), confirmed the definitive dismissal of the case against the six former military commanders. The men were indicted on January 5, 2010, and today released from all responsibility. They are: The former Chief of the Armed Forces, Romeo Vásquez Velásquez; former Deputy Chief of the Joint Chiefs, Venancio Cervantes; the former Commander of the Army, Miguel Ángel García Padget; the former Commander of the Honduran Air Force, Luis Javier Prince Suazo; the former Commander of the Naval Force, Juan Pablo Rodríguez and the former Inspector of the Armed Forces, Carlos Cuéllar García.

The Prosecutor General, Luis Rubí, had accused the then board of commanders of abuse of authority. The penalty for this offense is between 4 and 6 years in prison.

Ex-president Zelaya believes the ruling was unjust, and issued the statement, “Hondurans knew that the judgement was going to go their way, but it is disturbing that they protected those behind the coup.” “I don’t want revenge because I forgive them and wish them the best of luck”.

Honduras's First Lady Cuts the Ribbon

“My presence at this solemn ceremony is a show of support for what has been done within the judiciary to strengthen the unity of the genders, which represents a breakthrough both for women and the image of our country before the world,” said the First Lady.

The incorporation of this approach to justice services, aims to provide a more relevant part of monitoring new commitments that have been made in the statements of the meetings of judges and justices of the highest courts of America.

The President’s wife expressed her joy at the opening of the Gender Unit, as it will contribute positively to the eradication of misconduct, so Hondurans can enjoy an authentic justice, regardless of gender.

Attorney Ingrid Vivian Linck, coordinator of the Gender Unit of the Judiciary, said she assumes the challenge of leading the drive to ensure a level of equality of justice, to reach those in need.

Also in attendance were the wife of the President of Congress, Ana Rosalinda Hernandez, Minister of the National Women’s Institute (INAM), María Antonieta Fernandez Botto and the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Ana Pineda.

A Coup in the Works in Honduras?

Honduran President Porfirio Lobo says he has found out that some political opponents want to overthrow him, a statement from the president’s office reported.

Lobo said Tuesday he knew the names of those who are plotting against him and warned them not to try a coup.

Asked by reporters if he is behind a movement to replace the Supreme Court president, Lobo said, “It’s the president of the republic they want to get rid of. But they’re going to tangle with me. Never should we forget that for every action there’s a reaction. I tell you, we have everything well tracked. We have located all of them. I know who they are. I have all the information, and I believe they have made a mistake with me.” Excerpt from: CNN International.
