Civil defense chief Lisandro Rosales says the Taujica River has overflowed its banks, damaging some homes in northern provinces. He adds that about 5,000 people in Colon province were stranded when a bridge was knocked out by flood waters.

There are no immediate reports of fatalities.

Meanwhile, fishermen and firefighters in the coastal community of Omoa rescued about 20 dolphins that were swept onto beaches by high waves caused by the storm. Biologist Gustavo Cabrera told local media Friday that some of the dolphins suffered contusions.

Green Alert Announced in 6 Departments

Due to the entry of a mass of cold air, accompanied by high pressure, the Permanent Contingency Commission (COPECO) declared a green alert for 48 hours in six departments.

Places under alert are: Cortes, Atlantida, Colon, the Bay Islands, Yoro and the northern coastline of Gracias a Dios.

According to the analysis of the National Meteorological Service (SMN), this phenomenon will generate very cold temperatures overnight. The North coast can expect temperatures up to 18 degrees Celsius, 11 degrees in the West, 14 degrees in Tegucigalpa and the Midwest part of the country, 17 in the East and 22 degrees in the South.

The expected rainfall ranges between 70 and 120 mm in 24 hours along the Honduran Caribbean.

Copeco’s report states that gusts of wind can reach a speed of between 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, strengthening to 50 miles per hour.

This will generate a surge of 5 to 7 foot waves in the Bay Islands and the Gulf of Honduras. The yacht to Utila this morning was cancelled. Waters off the Mosquito could reach up to 9 feet tall.

Preventative measures are recommended, such as staying away from flood-prone areas and awareness of possible mud slides.
