Dole Proposes New Settlements

After fighting lawsuits for decades over its use of a dangerous pesticide in the 1970′s, Dole Food Co. is attempting a breakthrough move to settle outstanding claims by its former workers.

Lawyers for the Westlake Village, Los Angeles produce giant have filed a request in Los Angeles Superior Court asking that nearly 1,500 Honduran farm workers who are suing Dole be allowed to drop out of those suits and settle their claims out of court under an existing program arranged by the company and Honduran government officials.

Armed Forces Move Toward Aguan River

Marlon Pascua, Honduras’ Minister of Defense has announced that President Porfirio Lobo is deploying soldiers from the North Coast of La Ceiba to protect the Aguan River region.

2,000 soldiers and police officers will be assigned there to seize drugs and illegal weapons. The government says the Aguan River region is being targeted by drug traffickers in increasing numbers, as they try to move their products to the United States. The police and military will be there to search vehicles and pedestrians, and pursue suspects.

UW Cancels Nike…Cornell to follow?

The University of Wisconsin-Madison cancelled its licensing agreement with Nike Inc. on Apr. 9th, becoming the first university to respond directly to the company’s recent labor violations in Honduras. According to Chancellor Biddy Martin, former provost of Cornell University, Nike did not adequately support Honduran workers after two factories shut down abruptly in Jan. 2009.

While Nike did not own the factories, located in Chomala and San Pedro Sula, it hired them as suppliers to produce its apparel…More from Cornell University here.
