The Support Mission Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras “MACCIH” Proposes Monitoring Funding of Political Campaigns

Saul Escobar, president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal relayed to the press after a meeting with members of MACCIH, that there is concern about the illicit income campaigns might have.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández Facing a wave of protests calling for his resignation after admitting his Political Campaign for President was funded by “tainted funds” including money stolen from the IHSS Scandal.

MACCIH has proposed to work on a reform to that will include auditing of each candidates funds.

Escobar also explained that the goal is to consult with organizations and personalities who represent all sectors of society regarding the issue; in order to reach a consensus on its implementation. MACCIH hopes to pass the referendum by September of this year.

MACCIH spokesman, Juan Jimenez, stated the campaign funding is a very relevant issue for the mission as it directly affects the heart of corruption and impunity in the country.
