Think of Your Health this Holiday

The risk of contracting HIV / AIDS increases during the holidays in Honduras, health authorities are warning. Those who are sexually active should be certain to carry condoms and avoid excessive use of alcohol and drugs.

A representative of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS), Kenneth Rodriguez, admitted that the intake of alcohol and drugs are factors in an increasing number of cases of the disease. Alcohol acts as a dis-inhibitor, and people are more likely to engage in behavior that they may not otherwise have.

He recommended to take precautions because this disease “does not discriminate, it affects all races, ages, and sexual orientations,” he said.

The areas of the country most affected by the epidemic of HIV are Valle de Sula and Tegucigalpa, as the largest areas of the country, then La Ceiba, Tela, Choluteca and Comayagua, according to Rodriguez.

The Honduran Institute for the Prevention of Alcoholism (IHADFA) revealed that Hondurans during the holiday season consume more than 27,000 beers, 1,557 liters of liquor and liquor compound, and 27, 354 packs of cigarettes.
