UNAH Closed by Health Department

The Independent National University of Honduras (UNAH) has been closed by the Secretary of Health. The closing was ordered yesterday due to “precarious conditions of hygiene” that Health inspectors found there. Union of Workers of the UNAH (SITRAUNAH) have been on strike since February 23, 2010, at which time they overtook several buildings of the UNAH, and there has been an accumulation of refuse throughout the university complex as a result of that strike.

Julieta Castellanos, the director of the UNAH, announced that the university will remain closed for a period of 10 days, while the sanitary crisis is resolved. SITRAUNAH says no health hazard.SITRAUNAH says no health hazard.Members of SITRAUNAH have denied that the UNAH conditions are unhealthy.

The measure will affect about 45 thousand students who will not be able to attend university classes.
