UNAH Teachers Union Still on Strike

The Honduras National Autonomous University (UNAH) strike has been ongoing for one month as of today.

The strike was initiated on Feb. 23rd, when the workers union declared a gradual work stoppage and demanded the approval of a new contract, including wage increases. The Director of the UNAH, Julieta Castellanos, claims there are no funds to pay for any salary increases.

Authorities are threatening to issue arrest warrants for the striking teachers, and Castellanos said she will not negotiate as long as the strike continues, and will deduct the missing hours of teaching for those involved in the protest.

“They went on strike illegally, but the forms will reflect the payment, according to the working hours”, warned the director.

The protest movement began at the UNAH headquarters in the capital, Tegucigalpa, and has spread to the regional university centers in La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula.
