Agricultural State of Emergency

A state of emergency has been declared by the government for the agriculture sector regarding the possible effects of the climate phenomenon known as “El Nino”.

In order to avoid the possibility of a lack of basic grains for the country, an adoption of measures to be taken were ordered.

The Honduran Council of Ministers assigned $600,000 to help 7,000 agriculture producers in the country ensure the harvest of 20,000 tons of beans, in order to cover the demands in July and August.

Honduran Agriculture and Livestock Minister, Jacobo Regalado, set the goal of producing 20,000 tons of beans for 2010. Regalado added that the harvest should be ready before the rainy season which begins in the last days of May. The beans will be commercialized between June and July.

Honduran agriculture sector coordinator, Samuel Reyes, has stated that the “El Nino climate phenomenon is affecting some beans and other grain harvests, and it will impact the supply. The emergency declaration aims to avoid such a problem.” He added that their goal is to guarantee there will be a market supply, as well as avoid a runaway increase in the price of people’s basic grains.
