Alternative to Minimum Wage

The Labor Secretary, Felícito Avila, said that the government hopes today to ratify with the labor unions, a proposal to grant a bonus compensation of 2,000 lempiras, instead of a minimum wage increase this year.

Avila said that the leaders of the labor unions have been invited to a meeting today with President Pepe Lobo, in order to decide whether to accept the bond, and outline a strategy for minimum wage negotiations for 2011 in Honduras.

According to Avila, the State is not able to commit the employer to providing a minimum wage at this time, because of the economic crisis that Honduran businesses are trying to overcome.
