Ambassador Kubiske’s Condolences for Honduran People

PRESS RELEASEHonduras Prison Fire Aftermath

Condolence Message to Honduran People from Ambassador Kubiske

TEGUCIGALPA – On behalf of the American people, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the tragic fire at the Comayagua correctional center, and to the Honduran people.

The United States fully supports President Lobo’s statements calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the causes of the fire, and accountability for any found responsible, so that such a tragedy does not happen again.

During the fire, the United States government supported Honduran first responders by providing emergency equipment and firefighting expertise supplied by the U.S. military’s Joint Task Force-Bravo, stationed at Honduras’ Soto Cano airbase, near Comayagua. The United States is also providing protective clothing, medical care and supplies, and food and water to support Honduran recovery efforts and treatment of survivors.

I have informed President Lobo that the United States remains committed to providing additional assistance to the Honduran government, as the recovery efforts and investigations continue.
