Bulgarians Documenting Honduras

Some two months ago the Chairman of Friendship Society Bulgaria – Honduras, Spas Tashev, came across an interesting bit of information not known before in Bulgaria: The only river in the entire world that has been named after Bulgaria (in Spanish Rio Bulgaria) happens to flow near the city of La Ceiba on the Caribbean coast of Honduras.

After further research, it was found that a Bulgarian community has been living in Honduras for at least 100 years. At the beginning of the 20th century, that community discovered an unknown river and named it “Bulgaria” in honor of their home country.

In celebration of this find, a photographic expedition will kick off today with the aim of studying and taking pictures of the history of the Bulgaria River of Honduras. The project will be a shared cooperative with the culture center in La Ceiba, and includes two prominent Honduran photographers, Nimer Alvarado, and Mervin Corales.

The Rio Bulgaria receives its water from the Gracias a Dios mountain range in the Pico Bonito National Park. It is surrounded by dense jungle, and due to the difficult access, its valley has not been studied at length. The group will be accompanied by locals, as well as two soldiers of the Armed Forces of Honduras who are skilled at navigating the mountainous areas of this infamous jungle.

The photographic expedition will begin in the village of Tegucigalpa, where the springs of the Rio Bulgaria will be studied, as well as the animals and plants along its course.

The photographs will be presented in an exhibition named, “Rio Bulgaria – the Bulgarian Presence in the Land of Maya”, to be displayed in the spring in Bulgaria and Honduras simultaneously.
